The Dow were up 76 points to 11096, The Dow had been up as many as 135 points.
The market's gain came as gold hit a new intraday high of $1,375.70 an ounce before falling back to settle at $1,370.50.
Crude oil settled up $1.34 to $83.01 a barrel. Interest rates were higher, with the 10-year Treasury yield rising to 2.431% from 2.422% on Tuesday. The dollar was lower against major currencies.

But financial stocks weaken on mortgage worries with uncertainty raised by problems with home foreclosures.
Apple surged above $300 for the first time, closing at $300.14.
JPMorgan and Intel slip despite earnings gains.
